Picking your check-in time

How to choose a check-in time that fits your mornings, your classes and your appointments, and what to do on days you will be out.

Last updated

The short version

  • Pick a time when you're usually up, dressed and near the phone.
  • Today, you get one check-in time a day. You choose which days of the week.
  • If you have regular plans, pick a time that works before you leave on those days too.
  • Going out at your usual time? Pause check-ins for the day.
  • You can change the time whenever you like. It applies straight away.

What makes a good check-in time

  • You are awake and up. Not so early that the call wakes you, and not while you are in the shower.
  • You are usually home. Think about your busiest mornings, not your quietest ones.
  • The phone is nearby. If you carry a cordless phone around the house, or keep a cell in your pocket, even better.
  • Earlier is safer. If something happened overnight, an earlier check-in means someone knows sooner.

Many people land somewhere between 8 and 10 in the morning. Some prefer the evening, as a way to say "I got through the day."

One time, the days you choose

Right now, each person has one check-in time, and you pick which days of the week it runs. You can't yet set a different time for different days.

So if you have a class at 10 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, a check-in at 9 works every day of the week. Pick the time that suits your busiest day.

When you will be out

  • Out for the morning, now and then: pause check-ins in the app for that day. When the pause ends, check-ins pick up again on their own.
  • Away for a trip: pause check-ins for the dates you are away. On a cell phone, we text you when the pause starts and when it ends.
  • Out at the time, but you have your cell: you can answer, or text OK once the check-in arrives. A text sent before your check-in time doesn't count yet.

If you just miss one, that's fine. We try again before anyone is contacted. See missed your check-in?.

How long before someone is told

Your check-in time is when the first try goes out. Your care level decides how long we keep trying before your Care Circle is contacted: roughly 15 minutes on High, 40 minutes on Moderate and an hour on Light. Keep that in mind if you pick a time close to when you leave the house.

Changing your time

Open your settings in the app and change the time or days. The new time applies straight away. If today's check-in has already gone out, the new time starts tomorrow. If you'd like a hand, call our support line at 519-914-0434.

Try it for two weeks

Your first choice is a best guess. After a week or two you'll know if it fits. See your first month.

Common questions

Can I have a different check-in time on weekends?

Not yet. Each person has one check-in time, and you choose which days it runs. Pick a time that works on your busiest day.

What is the best time for a daily check-in call?

A time when you are reliably up and near the phone. Many people choose between 8 and 10 in the morning, because an earlier check-in means someone knows sooner if something happened overnight.

How do I skip a day?

Pause check-ins from the app for that day. They start again on their own when the pause ends.
