Your first month: getting used to your daily check-in
What to expect in your first few weeks, how to settle on the right time, and how to grow your Care Circle at your own pace.

The short version
- Right after setup, reply YES to our first text (or press 1 if we call). Check-ins start once you agree.
- The first couple of weeks are about getting used to the call and finding a time that fits.
- Start with one person in your Care Circle and add more when you are ready.
- Until someone in your Care Circle has said yes, a missed check-in can't be passed on to anyone. Check that they have.
- Change your time or days whenever you like. Nothing is set in stone.
A daily check-in is a new habit. Like any habit, it takes a little while to feel normal. Most people find that after a week or two, the call becomes part of the morning, like the kettle or the paper.
Day one: say yes to your check-ins
As soon as you finish setting up, we text you to ask if you agree to daily check-ins. Reply YES. If your number is a home phone, we call instead, and you press 1. The request stays open for 7 days, and your check-ins start once you have agreed, so reply when you can.
Missed it? No problem. You can send a new request from your dashboard, or call our support line at 519-914-0434 and we will help.
Week one: get used to the call
Your check-in is short. A friendly voice says your name and asks how you are. Press 1 if you are okay, or 2 if you are not feeling great (that still counts as checking in). Press 3 if you need help. You don't have to wait for the whole message. As soon as you know the answer, press it. If you get texts, reply OK.
Before your first call, save our number in your phone so you know it is us. You can also hear the voices and choose the one you like.
Week two: check the time still works
The first time you pick is a best guess. After a week or two you will know if it fits. Ask yourself:
- Am I usually up, dressed and near the phone at this time?
- Do I have regular plans on some days, like a class, church or appointments?
- Did I miss any calls because I was busy or on another call?
If the answer to any of those is a little off, change the time or the days. Our guide to picking your check-in time has a few ideas.
Adding your Care Circle
Your Care Circle is the small group of people we contact if you don't answer. When you sign up for yourself, you add at least one person during setup. Lots of people want to think about who else to ask, and that is fine. You can add more people whenever you like.
You don't have to ask them first. We text each person to ask if they agree. Calls and texts start after they reply YES. Our guides on adding your Care Circle and choosing your emergency contacts walk through it.
Check that someone has said yes
Your check-ins still happen while you wait. But if you miss one and nobody in your Care Circle has agreed yet, we have no one to pass it on to. Look at your Care Circle page in the first few days. Anyone still waiting can be sent the request again with the Resend button.
After the first month
By now the call should feel routine. A good time to do a quick tidy-up:
- Is your Care Circle in the right order, with the nearest person first?
- Has everyone you added said yes?
- Does anyone have a spare key, and do they know how to get in? See entry details for your Care Circle.
- Going away soon? You can pause check-ins while you travel.
Common questions
What if I forget and miss a call in the first week?
That's normal. We try again, and you can also check in by text if you use a cell phone. See missed your check-in? for what happens next.
Can someone help me set it up?
Yes. Call our support line at 519-914-0434, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern, and a real person will walk through it with you.
